Breeder Education

Breeding is a serious responsibility that should not be undertaken without a great deal of planning and forethought. Why? Because responsible PBGV breeders work very hard to avoid genetic defects in order to produce healthy, sound puppies. Whether you “just want to have one litter” or you want to start a long-time commitment to breeding PBGV’s, please contact someone in the PBGV Club to find an existing breeder or contact a PBGV breeder mentor and get matched up with an experienced breeder who will help you through the process. We provide extensive information about our breed throughout this website. Following are some important resources:

  • Pedigree/Health Database
  • Breeders Code of Best Practices
  • AKC Code of Sportsmanship
  • PBGV Breed Standard
  • Slideshow explaining the Breed Standard & how it relates to the PBGV’s form and function.
  • Breed Preservation
  • POAG In The PBGV Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a painful, blinding disease and is hereditary.
  • Submit POAG Results: Forward a copy of the official test result to Jo Quintenz, poag@pbgv.org . This may be done electronically or by mail to 741 N. Jones Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85716. If it is not noted on the result document and your dog is not already in the database, please provide your dog’s sire/dam, date of birth, sex, AKC or other registered number and registered name and call name if possible.
  • All Other Health Test Submittals: For tests that are NOT submitted to OFA, please complete this online PBGVCA Pedigree Health Test Submittal Form. You must attach a copy of your PBGVs health test report signed by examining veterinarian and include the name and address of hospital. You can attach a total of 3 reports. Alternatively, you can mail or email a copy of the official report to Veronica Scheer, webmaster@pbgv.org, 5 Wakeman Hill Rd., Sherman, CT 06784-1925.
  • Health Problems: To submit information on health issues with your PBGV (such as epilepsy) the process is simple:
    • Have basic dog info readily available such as call name, date of birth, etc.
    • Based on veterinarian’s diagnosis, you will answer a few questions.
    • The form collects ONE major health issue at a time. Have more than one health issue…you will be able to return to a new form after completing the first.
    • PBGVCA Clinical Health Information Form or email Veronica Scheer, webmaster@pbgv.org
  • Breeder’s Tool Chest  Created to encourage new breeders by breeders. There are 3 major categories:
    • The Basics: links to our breed standard, pedigree-health database, Breeder’s Code of Best Practices, puppy and stud dog service directories, etc.
    • Being a Responsible Dog Breeder: The lion’s share of information lives here and new information will be added over time. It includes selecting breeding stock, health testing, AKC/International Registries, educational videos, getting the bitch pregnant right on through to puppy packets (new version coming soon) and sample new puppy owner contracts, assessing new puppy buyers, etc. documents.
    • Breeder’s Community: Lists our mentors who will help members interested in breeding, breeder/health articles, call to join PBGVCA and a place where breeders can share their own experiences.
    • There is no substitute for the extensive experience available from our breeder community.
