Summer 2017 Saber Tails 37
Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America
Charles Hurty, Beverly and Tony Childs, Shelly Barclay and
Mona Stiles, Jan Zigich and Ross Litman, Timothy Bryant,
Debra Mills, Eddie Dziuk and Kathy Marshall.
The evening kicked off with the “Parade of Crowns” and
20 PBGVs and their owners all wearing custom crafted
crowns paying homage to the Queen City. There were
no crown “standards” – over grooming and over blinging
your crown was expected; being cheesy and tacky was en-
couraged and a “tasteful” crown could get you “dumped.”
It was a fun way to begin the 30th celebration emceed by
Show Chair Beverly Childs. The top prize in the Parade of
Crowns went to Sharon Betker with Bolli and Lori Megli
with Sparks.
In its fourth year, the Top 20 is a showcase for the top
ranked PBGVs in breed standings for 2016. Barbara Pep-
per (AKC Judge), Bryan Helvey (PBGV Breeder), and Zack
Helmer (professional Handler) were the Judges for this
event. Co-Chairs Pam
Helmer and Sue Smyth
had each Top 20 PBGV
enter the ring through a
lighted arch beautifully
decorated by Shelley
Barclay, Tammy Taskey
and Tammy Hensley.
The Top PBGVs were
spotlighted and their
song (chosen by their
owner) played as they
gaited around the ring
and were judged on the
table. Attendees could
vote for their favorite
“People’s Choice” PBGV.
The Top 20 winner and People’s Choice – GCH Soletrader
Annie Mac - was announced on Saturday evening at the
Annual Banquet and Auction. After the Top 20, everyone
celebrated the 30th PBGV National with champagne and
cupcakes. Special Top 20 dessert plates were the table fa-
vors and used for dessert.
On Saturday we held our National in Conformation
which included Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes judged
by Breeder Helen Ingher. The 4-6 month old Beginner
Puppy Class was judged by Breeder Carol Doerge. Ju-
nior Showmanship, the Breed Classes, and Best of Breed
were judged by Judy Webb. National trophies were hand
turned wooden bowls lovingly finished and branded by
PBGV member Robert “Bob” Morris. Each item featured
the 2017 show logo. Rosettes were presented to each
placing PBGV.

On Saturday evening, we again celebrated the 30th PBGV-
CA National with the Annual Banquet and Auction. Auc-
tion Chair Janice Hayes raised almost $10,000 with the on
line auction, silent auction and live auction made up of
items donated by the membership and friends of PBGVs.
PBGVCA also recognized outgoing board members and
service awards were presented. A number of club mem-
bers received membership pins.
On Sunday, as several attendees began making their we
traveled to the Tokeena Beagle Club field in Townville,
SC for the PBGVCA Hunt Tests to be held on Monday and
Tuesday. Hunt Chair Paul Urban and his committee did an
outstanding job juggling two fields which were about 10
miles apart. On Monday evening a Low County Boil was
served at the Hunt Dinner and Auction. Auction Chair
Carol Urban did a fabulous job raising money to help cov-
er the extra hunt expenses. Over this two day event we
had 55 hounds entered, nine PBGVs passed the Hunting
Instinct Test and there were 74 qualifying runs over the
two day event. Special Hunt signs were made by Tony and
Beverly Childs for the hunt pictures. No we did not shoot
or catch the rabbits! Hunt qualifiers can be located at:

As you can tell from the Qualifiers in Agility, Obedience,
Rally and Hunt - PBGVs can do it all including Conforma-
tion. Our Triathlon had 17 out of 19 PBGVs qualify in ei-
ther Beginner or Advanced Triathlon! No matter what
event PBGVs participate in and no matter how they have
