24 Saber Tails Spring 2017

Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America

regard tradition for the “opportunity” to show off her voice.  Some breeders and exhibitors might choose to disregard

our standard for a chance to show off their PBGVs in what they think is a better way than what our standard calls for.

A

nother possibility is that a PBGV has some outstanding traits that keep it winning and winning.  Most of us are influ-

enced by top-winning dogs but if a PBGV has negative qualities or is shown in a way that take away from its purpose

as a rabbit hunter, we need to think twice before supporting that animal or handler.

A

s much as we don’t like to admit it, some judges are focused on the wrong end of the lead.  A top handler may be

showing a PBGV that could not hunt rabbits or shows it in a manner that does not conjure up a PBGV in the field

with its tail held like a saber.

I

f we love our breed, we will honor it by respecting the breed standard.  When we feel changes need to be made to

strengthen certain traits or discourage certain trends evolving within the breed, we will become active within the PB-

GVCA to facilitate change in a positive way.
