Spring 2017 Saber Tails 19

withdraw from CHIC. This decision is not an indictment
of CHIC or hip dysplasia health testing for other breeds.
We recognize its importance of hip testing in many other
breeds; however, as a group, the Board did not believe
that the available evidence supports OFA hip evaluations
as a valid measure of hip health in the PBGV.

FAQs
Does this mean I will lose my CHIC number?
No…the CHIC numbers issued will remain in effect. No
additional CHIC numbers will be issued for PBGVs.
What tests do the parent club recommend?
The PBGVCA recommends all PBGVs have a CERF/OFA eye
test for eye health issues and that all PBGVs are tested for
POAG (or CLEAR by parentage) if being used for breeding,
and all should be tested for POAG if the status of the par-
ents is unknown or includes a Carrier/Carrier or Carrier/
Affected breeding.
Does this mean I cannot do additional health test-
ing?
Absolutely not! You can continue to have any health tests
you wish conducted and recorded with OFA. Using one
of my dogs as an example below, you can see that I con-
ducted more tests than were required fto obtain a CHIC
number on my girl who I planned to breed. Since I have
been asked in the past by stud dog owners to provide re-
sults for additional tests, I now conduct Cardiac on all my
dogs and Patella and Elbow on a routine basis.
However, the Board has the responsibility of determining
what tests should be done on all PBGVs and these tests
should be considered a minimum recommendation with
additional testing to be done with respect to the specific
concerns of the breeders and those interested in adding
a PBGV to their family.

“Always Appletini” yields this screen showing health tests
conducted and registered with OFA.
