before they ran, ZZTuX and Rockin’ Rowdy took home the

trophy that weekend for their handlers buying the most

B

arn Hunting has many similarities to nosework, search

and rescue and earth dog activities. It’s a great sport for

older dogs – big and small, and

older people too! Three-legged

dogs can compete, deaf dogs can compete.  Basically...any dog is

eligible.  If you think it’s something you and your dogs might en-

joy, go to the Barn Hunt website (www.barnhunt.com) to review

the rules and regulations – and then register your dogs to get an

official Barn Hunt number!

MAGIC EAR POTION

by Julie Shannon...and as previously published in Saber Tails

T

his solution was called The Blue Lotion, which I thought was rather confusing since once it is mixed the solution

turns purple, so I just call it the Magic Ear Potion!  I try to put it in both ears of all my PBGVs each week and, if I

am consistent, I never have any ear problems.  Also, it is very clean to use and does not leave an ugly, oily stain on

the outside of the ear like so many of the ear cleaners from the vet.  You may have to order the two main ingredients

from your pharmacy but it is worth it.
1 16 ounce bottle of alcohol
2 tablespoons of Boric Acid powder
16 drops of gentian violet
Mix by shaking the contents and shake each time you use it.

D

irections:  It is best to do this outside.  Fill one of the ear canals and hold a tissue or cotton ball over the opening.

Rub the ear at the base.  Stand back because the dog will shake his head and the solution will stain your clothing.

Repeat in other ear.
Please note: If your dog has an active ear infection, you might want to consult with your vet before using this potion.

With the primary ingredient being alcohol, it is a good idea to use this in a healthy ear for prevention.  You can imagine

how much this might sting if poured into an ear rubbed raw by a dog’s scratching or from infection or open sores.

Editor’s Note - Some kennel clubs are start-

ing to hold Barn Hunt Introductions in

conjunction with their dog shows called

‘Rat-n-Go’s.  Keep an eye out for one near

you.  You can take your dog to ‘try it out’

and see if it’s something you would enjoy.
