Mentorsmustrecognizethenecessityoftreatingall

qualitybreedersequally,andcarefullyavoidpointingonly
toone’sowndogsasmodelsoftypetoemulate.Thedogs
shouldbedescribedinpositivetermsforthemostpart.
Wewanttoteachstrengths,notweaknesses.

1.Mentorshould,inadvance,familiarizehimorherself

withthestandard’sterminologyandanatomicalterms.
Mentorwilltakeacopyofthestandardwithhimorherto
ringsideforreadyreference.Thementorwillalsotakean
extramentorformfortheobservertofilloutonhisorher
mentoringexperiencewithyou.

2.Amentordoesnotneedtocommentoneachdog.Bea

goodlistenerandallowtheobservertocomment.Amentor
doesnotdiscusstheobserverorthedogsintheringwith
otherpeople.

3.Whenaskedtomentor,asktheobservertohaveread

thestandard.

4.Askhimorhertoprepareabriefdescriptionofthe

breedfromthestandard.

5.Asktheobservertodescribethefollowing:head

(expression),tail,overalloutlineandtemperamentusing
termsofthestandard.

6.Allowtheobservertoselectthetypicaloutlinesfrom

aclassafterobservingafewpreviousclassesusingbreed-
specificterminology.

7.Allowtheobservertoaskanyquestionsheorshe

mayhave.

8.Collecttheevaluationsheetonhisorherexperience.
