32 Saber Tails Summer 2019

Conformation Judge’s Comments

by Linda Scanlon

Thank you to the members of

the PBGV Club for granting

me the privilege of judging your

Regional Specialty.  With their

outgoing and charming person-

ality PBGVs always make me

smile.  It was a pleasure to have

so many of them together.
Special thanks to Lora Megli,

show chair and her team for the

lovely hospitality, communica-

tion and transportation.

It was pleasing to see the overall consistency defining pe-

tite rather than grand characteristics.  Nearly all were ro-

bust, most had at least decent length of foreleg, very few

with too short/long a muzzle, few with overly long tails

or ears.  Shape of forelegs has improved drastically as have

feet - well done breeders!
Be careful of bites – not many were “off” but as with

any breed that allows a level bite and still wants a strong

underjaw, undershot is always a concern.   Also beware

of getting a broader, flatter skull – in this breed less stop

seems to go with that style of head so you lose 2 pieces of

type at once.
Please remember this is a hunting breed – muscle is im-

portant and is partly hereditary, partly environmental.
My apologies for the less than full critique. The tape re-

corder failed at the last minute and trying to read my

hurried scribbling made while judging was more difficult

than it should have been due to my wretched handwrit-

ing at the best of times.
9-12 dogs -- a pair of fun brothers; #7 was placed over

#9 due to his more compact appearance and shorter loin

though his brother had a slightly better shoulder angle.
12-18 dogs -- #11 won this class with his more compact

outline both moving and standing.  #13 was in better

muscular condition than the winner.
Amateur-Owner Handler dog – #15 – He had a good

coat and was strongly muscled.
Bred By Exhibitor dogs – I appreciated both being shown

with “rustic” appearance.  #19 was placed over

#17 having a harsher coat texture and correct bite.
