Letter From the

Foundation President

The mission of the PBGV Health

and Rescue Foundation is to pro-

mote the welfare of the breed by

providing funding for research,

education and rescue.

Is it possible that Fall is already here?!?!  So far, we have been faced with one

hurricane threat after another.  These are the situations that always bring out

the best in our PBGV community – members contacting other members to

find out how they are doing, offering to help in any way they can.  Hopefully,

by the time this issue reaches your mailbox, life will be getting back to nor-

mal and the holidays will be close at hand.

Research

Each year, the AKC/CHF grants are released for funding.  This year, the Foun-

dation voted to fund six grants on a variety of health topics.  These are listed

below.  You can research these grants for more information on the AKC/CHF

website:  www.akcchf.org

• 2175A – Development of a Brucellosis Vaccine for Dogs

• 2309 – Targeting the Cancer Epigenome

• 2257 – Identification of Genetic Risk Factors for Canine Epilepsy

• 2249A – Studying the Role of the Gastrointestinal Tract in Canine Epilepsy

• 2238A – Effect of Platelet Count on Platelet Tests in Dogs

• 2241 – The City Dog Study

Donation

The names ‘Animal Health Trust’ and ‘Catherine Mellersh’ should ring a bell.

Dr. Mellersh is the primary researcher who was responsible for the discovery

of the POAG gene in PBGVs.  In honor of her work that has benefitted our PB-

GVs so greatly, we donated to the AHT Bike Challenge Campaign to upgrade

the AHT MRI.

Rescue

As always, the Rescue Committee of the PBGVCA does all the hard work to

rescue a PBGV in need.  Our commitment is to provide financial support for

the dogs so that they will have a smooth transition into their forever home.
