hisissueofSaberTailsshouldarrivein
yourhomesinthemiddleofthe
busiesttimeofyear.Theholiday
seasonalwaysmakesmereflectonthe
pastandthecomingofanewyearfull
ofopportunity.Sinceweareallbrought
togetherbyourloveofhappyhounds,
IwillsayI’mincrediblythankfulforthis
clubandthefriendsithasbroughtintomy
life.Ofcourse,I’mthankfulformydogs…
that’sagiven,butbeinginvolvedwiththis
clubhasalsoenrichedmylifegreatly.
Ihavebeenremindedrecentlyabouthow
muchIappreciateallthe‘crazy’people
whosharemypassion.
Ayearago,myfriendMarilynfrom
workhadunusedvacationdaysso
accompaniedmetoEukanuba.Shehad
cometowatchacoupleoflocalshowsand
lovesanythingtodowithdogs.Otherthan
that,she’dneverbeeninterestedindog
showing.Atthepre-showsforEukanuba,
wewatchedobedienceandrallyforhours,
whereweranintoMikeWilliquette,whopatientlyansweredall
myfriend’squestionsandencouragedhertogetinvolved.We
spentagreatdealoftimeatagilitycheeringforMeganEsherick,
andhadgreatfunatoursetupwithCindyWilt,JanZigich
andWendyMartin.Iwasalittlenervousheadingoverto
conformationbecause…welllet’sbehonest…newbiesdon’t
alwaysknowunspokendogshowetiquette.Iwasstayingaway
fromtheringsomyboythatwasshowingwouldn’tseeme,
butMarilyngrabbedhercameraandtrudgedrightuptothe
entrancegateandstartedtalkingtopeopleandfawningoverall
thewell-quaffeddogs.Ithoughtforcertainshe’dcomebackin
minutes,chastisedbysomeoneforhypingupadogortalking
tosomeonetryingtoconcentrate.Iwassohappylaterwhen
shetoldmehowmuchfunshe’dhad.
Iwassoproudoftheexhibitors
(mostlyclubmembers)andhandlers
whohadtakentimetotalkwithher,
answerherquestionsandevenlether
petthedogs.Marilyn’senthusiasmis
infectiousandshe’sapersoneasily
liked,butthisscenariocouldhave
turnedoutverydifferently.Instead
ofwalkingawayfeelingrebuffedor
excluded,shecamehomeexcited
andfeelingincluded.
Fastforwardayear.Marilyn
nowownsaPBGVthatshetakesto
obedienceandrallyclasses,andshe’s
applyingtojointheclub.Recently,
shedecidedtoshowhergirlforfun.
Iwanttothankeveryonewhotook
thetimelastyeartofosterenthusiasm
inanenthusiasticnewperson.You
hadahandindevelopingthefuture
oftheclub!Thisisexactlywhat
oursportneedstothrive.Standing
ringsideatthebigshowscomingup(Eukanuba,Westminster
andthenationalspecialty)aswellasthoselocalshows,hunts
andtrialswherewespendmostofourtime,it’sgoodto
rememberthatyouaresurroundedbypeoplewhoare
observing,learningandassessing.Theirexperience,goodor
bad,willdeterminewhetherornotwecangrowandthrive.
Thankstoeveryonelastyearwhounderstoodthatasmile
andsomefriendlychit-chatareallittakestobeatremendous
ambassadorforourbreedandourclub.
