• Laurel/Ivybush – incoordination, salivation, vomiting, bloat, weakness, spasms, 

coma, death

• Lily-Of-The-Valley – vomiting, trembling, abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, 

death (leaves/flowers are more toxic than bulbs)

• Milkweed – staggering, convulsions, bloating, dilated pupils, weak pulse, 

coma, death

• Mistletoe – vomiting, diarrhea, dilated pupils, rapid labored breathing, shock, 

death within hours of toxic dose

• Nightshade – acute HGE, weakness, salivation, trembling, progressive paraly-

sis, death

• Oleander – gastroenteritis, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid pulse rate, weakness, death

• Philodendron – pain and local irritation to mucous membranes, salivation, renal failure, convulsions

• Sorghum – difficulty breathing, bloat, staggering, convulsions, bright red or chocolate brown blood, death

• Sweet Pea - weakness, lethargy, tremors, seizures and death (in large doses)

• Vinca/Periwinkle - vomiting, diarrhea, depression, hyptotension, tremors, seizures, coma, death

• Yesterday-Today-And-Tomorrow – dry mouth, tachycardia, dilated pupils, atax-

ia, tremors, depression

n most cases, symptoms will vary with the amount consumed.  Several of these 

plants are only dangerous during certain times of the year.  In some cases, only a few 

leaves or a single berry can bring on the worst possible reactions.  The “moral of the 
story” here is to research before you buy and before you plant.
