70 Saber Tails Winter 2016

Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America

several years without a dog in our lives. We decided that maybe we would like to get a new breed and attempt to partici-

pate in conformation showing.  The showing was my idea, since I had tried showing one of my Springers before.  Ini-

tially Carole wanted a Dandie Dinmont Terrier, but after nearly two years of trying to obtain a showable female Dandie

without any luck, we were at a dog show in Greenville, South Carolina and happened to see a PBGV for the first time.

We saw  CH Afterglow Woody Woodpecker and Carole fell in love with him and the breed. When I found out the breed

were rabbit hounds and loved to hunt, I was all in for obtaining a PBGV.

When did you get your first PBGV?

Again we were looking for a showable female and it took us until the fall of 2006 to find a breeder who was willing to sell

a showable female to unknown show people. We were fortunate to find Ron Newman and Mary Meritz (Carcinet Ken-

nels) who sold us Carcinet’s Jezebel on Oct 15, 2006. I was able to show Jessie to a Championship on Nov 16, 2007.  We

bred Jessie to CH Dehra Amazona Vidal and she had a litter of 3 dogs and 2 bitches on Aug 04, 2008.  We kept one male,

Red, and sold the rest as pet quality hounds. One of the other males went to Brenda Bond in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

We became close to Brenda through emails about Ben’s adventures, including his being kicked out of Puppy Kinder-

garten for being too much of a distraction to the other dogs, all he wanted to do was play.  We even went to visit with

Brenda and Ben in Cape Cod and the dogs all had a great reunion.  Ben came back to live with us on Dec 29, 2010.

Sadly, Brenda passed away Jan 1, 2011 after a battle with cancer.  Ben had not been registered with AKC and after we

obtained ownership of Ben we registered him with AKC as Brenda’s Benson of Pacar.

The male we kept we called Red because he got a red ribbon as an identifier when he was born. Consequently he was

named after the Red Baron (Baron von Richthofen) of WW1 fame.  Red was shown in Owner/Handler class and ob-
